Distribution and ecology
Known only from the area between Jervis Bay on the south coast of NSW and Mt Drummer in NE Vic.
Relationships
Part of the S. brownii complex of the S. macoorai group of subgen. Leptostemonum (Bean 2004).
Specimens were previously allocated to S. brownii (Symon 1981, Purdie et al. 1982) but following revision of this complex by Bean, the most southerly specimens were assigned to this species, S. silvestre. It differs from S. brownii by
- broader leaves (juvenile 4.5-9 cm wide, adult 2-3.6 cm wide) in S. silvestre, these to 3 cm wide (juvenile), to 3 cm wide (adult) in S. brownii
- shorter (7-12 mm long) pedicels in S. silvestre at anthesis, compared with 13-18 mm long for S. brownii
- fruits 13-17 mm diameter in S. silvestre, 18-29 mm diameter in S. brownii
The two species do not overlap in distribution, with S. silvestre occurring further south than S. brownii.
The most closely distributed species to S. silvestre of the S. brownii complex would be S. celatum which occurs in the
Plant status, if any
S. silvestre is listed on the Advisory List of Rare or Threatened Plants in Victoria - 2005 as Endangered in Victoria.
